An annotated check list of the smut fungi (Ustilaginomycetes) in Papua New Guinea has been compiled from an examination of herbarium specimens, literature and collections made during a survey in eight Provinces of Papua New Guinea during March and April 1998. The anther-smut Ustilago violacea is present in both European and North American populations of S. Alba, but it is unknown how or when the pathogen became established in North America.
